Hidden Gem Road Trip 2012

Pit Stop # 1 – Silver Islet, Ontario


Once a silver mining town on the shores of Lake Superior, Silver Islet is the picture perfect stop as you explore the Lake Superior coastline. The historic Silver Islet General Store which has stood here since the nineteenth century. Originally, the company store for the Silver Islet Mining and Lands Company, it’s tasteful restoration will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The welcoming blue exterior and picture perfect interior make it the perfect photo op on your journey.

Once you’ve fueled up with some treats at the general store you can venture along the Lake Superior coastline, or stop and explore some of the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park’s stunning trails and vistas. On the southern tip of a rugged peninsula near Thunder Bay, the Sleeping Giant boasts  boreal forests to experience the backcountry, and rugged trails to the top of the giant for unbeatable views of Lake Superior. Look for deer, moose and other large mammals in the park’s vast forests and lowlands.
