Staff Hidden Gems – The Best Food in Sault Ste. Marie!

Guest Blogger Angela Romano is a Travel Counsellor at the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Travel Information Centre. In her latest blog she shares her tips for finding one-of-a-kind gifts in the Soo.

Downtown Sault Ste. Marie is also blessed with some wonderful dining establishments and contrary to popular belief, there are other options besides “Italian” although the numerous Italian restaurants are second to none!

Frida’s Cafe & Art

One of my new favourite lunch and coffee places is an innovative Mexican Café & Art Gallery called Frida Café & Art named after legendary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo which in a short period of time has quickly developed a loyal following.  Frida’s offers authentic Mexican cuisine, traditional savoury & dessert crepes, salsa made fresh daily and superb coffeeFrida’s prides itself in using local food products as much as possible so their menu may be small but you are guaranteed to have the freshest, highest quality ingredients.  It is a great place to share some excellent coffee and delicious dessert with a friend while taking in some beautiful local art as well.

Queen Street Dining

Queen Street is also home to two of my other favourite lunch time establishments; Dish and Café Natura.  Dish offers cozy chairs, great coffee, healthy lunch options, homemade baking and Free Wi-Fi while Café Natura offers simple, whole food lunch options with an emphasis on local and organic food whenever possible.

City Meat Market

While downtown, I often make a point of visiting the friendly family owned, full-service downtown grocer City Meat Market who also make a point of supporting local farmers/local produce  in many of their on-site prepared foods including their  store-made sausages, burgers, beef products and they also sell local honey, maple syrup and coffee  from nearby St. Joseph Island.

Of course, there are days when I feel like indulging in some great pizza, think the Soo’s infamous Mrs. B’s or perhaps some great roasted chicken or beer-battered whitefish from one of the Soo’s favourite restaurants Muio’s

The dining options to be found in downtown Sault Ste. Marie are endless and so varied but some of my other local favourites include Cesira’s , Solo Trattoria, Panna, Arturo’s, and Thymely Manner to name just a few!

Well, all of this talk about restaurants has made me hungry so it’s time for me to sign off but if you ever find yourself in Sault Ste. Marie, be sure to visit downtown!
