7 Unexpected Finds in Windsor Essex Pelee Island

Discover the unexpected in Windsor Essex Pelee Island. From culinary surprises, to great lake vistas, we’ve got seven must-sees (and must-tastes!) for your summer road trip to @TWEPI.

1. Discover your new favourite burger

It’s all about local goodness at Billy’s Taphouse in Essex, Ontario. With 14 craft beers on tap, wines from Essex County and locally sourced ingredients, this is the perfect spot to fuel up for a day exploring the region. The fish tacos are a great light option, and for a hearty meal don’t miss the Blue Cheese Burger, topped with melted blue cheese, caramelized apples and prosciutto. Delish!

2. Soak up the Summer

If you are torn between exploring local museums and enjoying the summer weather, the John R. Park Homestead is the perfect way to do both. The house and farm buildings are restored to bring the nineteenth century to life, and just beyond the buildings is the turquoise water of Lake Erie, waiting to be admired from the front porch of the house.

Stretch your legs  or hop on your bike and enjoy the farmlands and waterways of the region from the The Chrysler Canada Greenway, a nearly 50 kilometre multi-use trail that connects natural areas, rich agricultural lands, historically and architecturally significant structures, award winning wineries and many other features that make the Essex Region unique.

3. Savour Local Wine

Canada’s southernmost region is home to Ontario’s longest growing season. Oxely Estate Winery, housed in a restored 1920s barn, celebrates this climate with delicious wines, from Riesling to Cabernet Franc, to their signature Wowza White. Linger over a glass of wine on their outdoor patio, and enjoy the cool breezes from the nearby lake.

4. Get to know the local spirits

@TWEPI’s local history is rich with folklore from the days of rum-running and Prohibition. Recently, they’ve welcomed the first premium craft distillery in the region, Wolfhead Distillery. Book a tasting, and sample their double barrel whiskey and small batch vodka. Stay a little longer and enjoy a meal at Wolfhead’s restaurant, featuring local seasonal ingredients.

5. SUP on Lake St Clair

After a day of indulging, get a little exercise at the Urban Surf Co. Rent a paddle board and explore on your own, or take advantage of one of Urban Surf Co’s many lessons, meet-ups, and group paddles. Top off your visit with one of their house-made smoothies.
